A medicina, antes de um conjunto de técnicas, é um lugar sociológico de crenças e rituais para cuidar de questões fundamentais da existência humana.

A medicina é um principio de formação da realidade como a arte e religião e revela, através de nossos sentidos, nosso imaginário sobre morte, vida, dor, sofrimento. Contudo, atualmente, a maneira como está estruturada a saúde dificulta a circulação adequada de gestos e palavras sobre este imaginário coletivo. A partir dos anos 90, a inserção de palhaços profissionais no cuidado de pacientes hospitalizados vem reinserindo potencia de ação com relação á afetos, comunicação, corpo, doença, saúde. A vida no hospital possibilita reinventar sentidos para os acontecimentos e o palhaço tem uma preparação profissional para construir relações de qualidade a partir da intensidade das experiências do hospital. Essa qualidade advém pela forma como o palhaço percebe a realidade. Ele é movido pela curiosidade e flexibilidade, pela atitude de valorizar a ação do outro por mais absurda que ela se apresente ao olhar racional. O palhaço incorpora os fatos recusados ou pouco falados ao momento, favorecendo a possibilidade de lidar com eventos geradores de tensão. Ele ajuda a lidar com a vulnerabilidade da condição humana, em um ambiente onde se exige a perfeição, com isso favorece a expressão de conflitos e dificuldades. Leva-nos a entrar em contato direto com nossos sentimentos, sem análises. Desse modo, estimula a capacidade de experimentarmos nossas emoções e aceitarmos diferentes possibilidades de reações , expandindo os limites de nossos comportamentos . Sua ação ensina que nada persiste e favorece nossa ligação com o acontecimento presente. Através desta filosofia de ação o palhaço propõe uma ética do encontro.Esta ética estabelece uma situação de cumplicidade e confiança nas relações e gera condições para que se estabeleçam espaços promotores de saúde. O seminário tem como objetivo, através de pesquisa de 20 anos sobre a atuação dos Doutores da Alegria – palhaços profissionais que atuam em hospitais – abordar questões centrais sobre o cuidado á saúde em nossos tempos e o papel do palhaço na medicina e na formação de sociedades saudáveis.
