The meeting with Bertil happened at a restaurant in Toulose – in February this year – where we combined breakfast with lunch with a lot of paper in the table, that told who we are how was our professional career was with clowns, health, theater and psychology in the last 20 years . Bertil Sylvander is one of the people who are writing the history of the path of acting like clowns with social interventions in the world. As his gaze affective and serene words made me realize that at times we were together. It combines important elements that gives a consistent place when speaking: practice, study and reflection. This material is in the book Voyage(s) sur la diagonale du clown co-authored with Jean Bernard Bonange published in 2012. A precious material for anyone who wants to understand the role of the clown in our times.
By Bertil Sylvander
This is a book about today’s clown and about the social practices around this inspiring character. Since the 16th century up to now, the clown has a long history ! Though, He or She becomes more lively than ever !
This is also a book about Bataclown, one of the earliest clown-theater group ever founded in France (1980). Enthusiastically devoted to the clown, It’s adventures are based on the 1968’ cultural revolution, the trends enhancing improvisation and mask working, the humanistic psychology, the institutional approaches, the teaching of Lecoq and the expression stream : what a fruitful crossroads !
Bataclown is now a well renowned clown school in France. It paved the way to a new pedagogical approach called “discover our own clown” and it launched the “social clowning” in France.
This book provides many valuable issues for all those who intend to experience how to “be a clown”, which allows you to come in close contact with yourself, with the other human beings and with the whole world ! It invites you to start a marvelous artistic journey and to dive deeply into the hidden and creative parts of yourselves ! It shows up the treasures of expression your body contains and reveals you endless fantasy. Yes, from now on, you will consider reality on a quite different way…
Let us discover the clown as a naïve character, living on the margins of the society, not complying with the social norms and developing an intense contact with those He or She meets.
If you meet a clown in a theater, or in a social arena, you will notice that He or She becomes a quite relevant mirror of our humanity, putting He’s nose on the main stakes of society !So He or She gives us a generous hope for our common future…
Following to the clown who requires from us to avoid the jail of normalization, the Bataclown gives here a nice lesson of freedom !
Have a nice trip in our company !
