The course on Narrative Medicine held in Porto from January 13th to 18th brought together a set of knowledge meant to deal with contemporary health: bioethics, the processes of communication and interaction with patients, writing, more integrated and participative ways of recording patient history that contain not only the clinical history, but also the aspects of the relationships and reflections of the experience, with space for the patient to write his needs and impressions.
I was impressed by the number of doctors and hospital managers present as well as students and teachers.
The prolongation of life and new incurable diseases have shifted the medical paradigm from cures to care. This has raised new issues and demands different training from health professionals.
We still have a long way to go, but the knowledge gathered under the umbrella of narrative medicine points to another step towards the needs of current healthcare.
