Humanizing is the point

How to present Bruninha? Difficult, she is special. Some time ago, she wrote me this e-mail:

“Dear Morgana,

I am preparing my resume for interviews for medical residence. The high points of the curriculum are the scientific production, the extra-curricular activities, and also the letters of recommendation. Many ask for the heads of the subjects to write these letters, or someone like that.

But, since I have to be courageous to it, I’d rather ask you. I think a letter of recommendation written by you on my resume makes me much happier and comfortable!

If you watch Bruna’s graduation speech, posted here by her, if you read this email carefully will see that she is representative of a form of medicine that wants to be born. She speaks on behalf of a youth who is building a new future for caring. Do I need to say more?

Her words may be familiar to some, but more important than what it says is the place from which she says it: the place for academic medical knowledge. Give new shape to that place, color it, soften it, affects it with the strength of the emotions: this has been, for me, the challenge of Bruna and many other medical students that I have known. It is an honor to make room for the words of Bruna.

In the process of choosing the profession prematurely, high school students base their choise on those subjects that suits them better, on issues that matter most to them, things they like to do, always thinking in a pleasurable way to enter the professional world, a way more enjoyable to produce (substance, service, technology and / or knowledge) and, especially, a good way to generate income. After all, “money is not all that matters, you also need to be happy”: the greatest proof of the subtle presence of embedded neoliberalism (here not as a political position, but as Foucault shows, a practice of life). Without notice, individuals are captured and governate them selfs  early without knowing deeply about their wishes, but want to build their human capital as productively as possible.

Medicine (here as a representative of all health): profession like any other else, and recognized with reasonable labor markets, low unemployment, wages, high status, and that in matters of such simplified vocational tests, those ideals are choices indicate “biology” and showing interest in “helping others.” But this is where the big fuss is, therefore, certainly can be much easier to help someone from other areas and actions.

But even those who are full of convictions, almost inevitably surrenders to the poverty of human relations, sharing of self, the separation of body and soul, to the standardization bodies, the autonomous existence of the disease, the neglect of the welfare and victory misunderstood technologies in dispute with the art of taking care, medication of life. Consequences of historical changes in health. Transformations that have occurred in order to address the needs of each moment, guided primarily by economic interests and bourgeois.

And then, professionals specialized in blocking disease in the pursuit of optimization of bodies, biopower and biomedicine transiting the control of life, death, bodies and disease. Healing actions, and including non healing (such as diet, physical activity and changes in lifestyle), are valid only allow generalization: what to serve for all. Experiences, perceptions, emotions and individual experiences matter little. It matters  the final numerical result of a significantly large sample. The complexity of life is reduced compared to the various safety devices and the rules imposed on the model of contemporary biocentrism. And practices such as homeopathy, acupuncture, anthroposophic medicine and all other forms of expression that are crushed scientific construction of infallible truth, a science unquestionable.

Meanwhile, to escape this explicit control, they search for other strategies.

Arises the humanizing practice that, contrary to what one might imagine, is not necessarily a solution to any problem, but the greatest health diagnosis that is depleted in cold, their human relations.

Society claims the autonomy of the individual, so governmentalised, already indoctrinated to demand the exact cause and origin of their suffering, as well as a proper medicalization.

So there is no output. Everything is mastered.

Indian Physics Vandana Shiva argues that “just a reductionist paradigm can not grasp the complexity of biological systems.” Vinicius de Moraes said, “Life is the art of meeting.” And Foucault concluded that there is a possible alternative to the absolute control:  resume old Greek government of himself without aspire to rule the other.

There is still hope.

After all, health is perhaps the area that allows for more encounters. Transdisciplinary meetings as well. Meetings can be horizontal, without one aiming to rule the other, with full respect for patient autonomy and the sense of producing, but with intentions really honest and have the love of neighbor as a path. Love as a political and vital force.

Like that, humanization becomes the tool to return that in addition to science, medicine is an art, and art can be perfect with everything that is possible to cure, treat and care coming from a creative human interchange, not a transaction business.

Caring only with a smile is the only political force of love in health, needed in every sincere dialogue. In the end, even if everything stays really dominated, are the smiles and glances that witness if the meetings gave its real contribution to life
